Running is the new black. Whether it’s a 5K, ½ marathon, marathon, or even triathlons, you really can’t go a week without seeing someone you know post a picture of themselves with a medal. From 1990 to 2012, the number of participants has more than tripled from 4.8 million to 15.5 million. The ratio of male runners to female has also drastically shifted. The previous 75-25% male-female divide is no more. Women now dominate running events with 56% of the participants to the men’s 44%.
With an increase in female runners also comes the need to find cute athletic gear. Athletic wear companies have really stepped up to the plate and created super adorable lines of dri-fit clothing for all types of active activities. And because running clothes are both cute and comfortable, it won’t be long before your workout wardrobe overtakes your everyday one. One of the most important pieces of gear that most people often forget is sunglasses. Sunglasses do more than make you look stylish on a sunny day. They’re crucial to blocking harmful UV rays on those long runs as well as those pesky swarms of gnats and the occasional pop-up shower.
Of course, images conjured of “running” sunglasses are not usually the most flattering on women. Those super adorable oversized Jackie O’s would never stay on your face as you run, but you just can’t seem to make yourself purchase those sharp angular athletic ones. What you need is to find the happy medium between functional and fashionable.
